The Application of the "Discovery Method" in Teaching Practice

Zhang Peng【China】

To write a good article, choosing the right ingredients is the first step to success. If a good article is a delicious dish, the ingredients are like rich and fresh ingredients. As the saying goes, "a clever woman cannot cook without rice." Without good ingredients, even if the chef has good skills, it is difficult to cook delicious dishes. This shows the importance of ingredients in writing. However, nowadays middle school students often feel that there is nothing to write about when writing essays. Life goes by day by day like plain water, without any differences or significant events worth writing about. Therefore, when writing essays, they cannot find any materials and just make up one thing, which leads to the plainness and standardization of essays. How to select talents? Students are very troubled. How to guide students in selecting materials? I am equally confused.

The concept of Discovery Writing is to guide students to live, observe, feel, and think in real life, and to awaken their interest in writing from the aspects of perceptual ability, sensory ability, cognitive strategy, writing skills, etc., in order to enhance their writing ability. Taking advantage of this learning opportunity, I began to think about countermeasures and make some attempts, hoping to be helpful to my classmates.

Firstly, reading more is the foundation.

Read good articles that are touching, interesting, convoluted, and thought-provoking. Look at what others have written about in life, whether it is big or small, whether similar things have happened around you, whether such things have been noticed by you, and whether they have triggered your thinking. Through extensive reading, let students know what kind of things can be used as materials for writing. The selection of materials for writing should have a broad perspective, but it should focus on small things, not necessarily grand events. The seemingly insignificant trivial things around you, even a sentence, an action, a glance, as long as they trigger your thinking and touch your heartstrings, are all good materials. For example, "Back" only depicts a few actions of my father crossing the railway to buy oranges for "me", but we feel a strong sense of fatherly love from it. The sea is a deep blue, but a drop of water can reflect the colorful sunshine. The same principle applies to the selection of materials for essays. There is no size difference in materials, only those that are appropriate, authentic, close to life, and close to your heart can become good materials.

Secondly, accumulating more is a prerequisite.

1. Accumulate authentic materials. We all know that authentic materials can enhance the persuasiveness and infectiousness of an article. Only 'truth' can make emotions abundant and full, passion overflowing, touching people's hearts and soul stirring. Emotions are nurtured in 'truth', and emotions are sublimated in 'truth'. Stories that are fabricated and fabricated can never touch people's hearts, so accumulating materials must first ensure authenticity.

2. Accumulate familiar materials. The more familiar the material is, the clearer its context becomes in our minds, so that we can use it skillfully and express it in fluent language, making it easier to write articles. Abandoning familiar things and writing unfamiliar materials often results in difficulty and unrewardness. So, selecting familiar materials in daily life makes it easier to write touching and outstanding works.

3. Accumulate materials that leave a lasting impression on oneself. What do you have feelings about? Simply put, it refers to things that cause you emotional waves, such as happiness, sadness, anger, helplessness, pride, regret, emotion, conflict... As long as you have any feelings, write them down in your own material book, and write down your thoughts in short words below. Gradually develop the habit of accumulating small things, and gradually you will have your own material library.

4. Accumulate novel materials. The themes of middle school students' essays are nothing more than getting close to nature, experiencing life, and paying attention to society. If everyone's living environment and experiences are similar, and the emotions expressed are also similar, it is inevitable that there will be monotonous articles. The novelty of materials becomes the key to the success of essays.

What is a novel material? My method is to guide students to record your 'unusual things in ordinary life' every week. Explain, it refers to the unusual actions, words, events, etc. that occur in ordinary scenes or people in your life. For example, once when asked to write about family ties in an essay, one of my students wrote about it. Recently, my mother has gone against the norm and is indifferent to her. She no longer cares about her, nor does she always ask about her academic situation. She even rarely talks to her. She felt very confused, and later slowly revealed the answer. It turned out that my mother saw an article in the education column of a newspaper, saying that when facing important exams, excessive care can sometimes cause serious psychological pressure on children. My mother knows that she is prone to nervousness during exams and wants to help her relieve stress through this way. Generally, we think that parents' concern and care is a manifestation of love, but we do not realize that sometimes indifference contains more detailed and profound love. This is an extension of students' weekend essays, and it can be considered a unique perspective.

5. Persist in the habit of accumulation. Accumulating materials is a long-term and difficult task. In order to encourage everyone to develop the habit of accumulation, I initially made it a mandatory rule to use a weekly journal format, writing one or two things every week. People began to feel that there was nothing to write about, which was very troublesome. Even if they did write about it, it was mostly "big events" they thought of, such as school class activities, or even fabricated things, which were all the same and lacked genuine emotions. But it's okay, I give them time. After a long time, when everyone has the awareness of paying attention to life and feeling life, and when they realize that real life is also interesting, they may naturally find materials for future essays.

Thirdly, thinking more is key.

By accumulating, everyone may have their own rich or poor material library. How to use it reasonably in writing requires more thinking. What are you thinking about specifically? I think there are several aspects to consider

1. Think about what materials to use. When reading an essay topic, the first thing to do is to review the topic and see what it requires us to write, or what I can write through this topic. After clarifying these, open your material library and select appropriate typical materials related to the essay topic.

2. Consider the presentation of materials. In addition to selecting typical and relevant materials for writing, it is also important to be innovative. However, in addition to the novelty of the materials themselves, unexpected presentation methods or unique perspectives can sometimes rejuvenate old materials. For example, by setting suspense, changing the narrative order, suppressing the desire to start, and writing your own unique feelings, you can make your material no longer clich é d. For example, when it comes to writing about family relationships, another student of mine wrote about it. She has always had a habit of sleeping with a blanket in her arms, smelling the warm scent on the blanket and sleeping soundly. When I was a child, I always thought that blankets smelled like this. Once, when I wasn't sleeping at home, I couldn't sleep holding onto a cold, hard, and damp blanket. It was only then that I realized that my mother must have been drying her blankets every day to make her sleep comfortably, so that she could smell the scent of the sun every day. She didn't directly write about her mother in the entire text, but focused on describing her own feelings and rendering how warm the scent of sunshine was. After reading it, we can feel that what truly warms her is not that scent, but her mother's love for her.

3. Consider the rich processing of materials. Even if the appropriate materials are chosen, it is impossible to move people's hearts just by stating them in a straightforward manner, which requires further thinking on how to write the materials vividly and specifically. Where should the whole matter be written in detail, and where can be briefly mentioned; Where can emotions or discussions be added, where should they be enriched through description, what should be described, and what techniques should be used for description? All of these need to be carefully considered and conceptualized before writing, otherwise even the best materials will turn into a cup of plain water.

Writing articles is like making clothes. If you choose good fabrics to make clothes, the resulting clothes will be beautiful and neat. If the fabric quality is poor, even with advanced craftsmanship, good clothing cannot be made. So people often say that when writing an essay, three points are in skills and seven points are in material selection. The selection of materials is the foundation of a good article. Writing ability is a high-level manifestation of Chinese language proficiency, and improving writing ability is not something that can be achieved overnight. For the training of student selection, teachers need to have enough patience, perseverance, and confidence in students, and provide them with continuous supervision, encouragement, and guidance.
