AI-Enhanced Mindful Mathematics Learning Ecosystem: Transforming Junior High School Mathematics Education in Thailand

Abstract: Mathematics education in Thailand faces significant challenges, including high levels of math anxiety, low student engagement, and persistent achievement gaps, particularly in junior high school. Digital transformation and artificial intelligence offer new possibilities for addressing these challenges, but most existing approaches focus primarily on academic outcomes without attending to the affective and socio-emotional dimensions of learning. Drawing on Thai cultural wisdom and Buddhist mindfulness principles, this paper presents the design and implementation of an AI-Enhanced Mindful Mathematics Learning (AI-MML) ecosystem for junior high school mathematics education. The ecosystem integrates mindfulness practices, gamified learning, and artificial intelligence to create holistic, engaging, and personalized mathematics learning experiences that address both cognitive and affective dimensions. The AI-MML ecosystem features three interconnected layers—mindful preparation, gamified inquiry, and AI-supported reflection—supporting five core components: Mindful Math Warm-up, Gamified Problem Solver, AI Mindful Tutor, Digital Growth Portfolio, and Community of Practice. Artificial intelligence serves as a "mindful learning companion" that provides not only academic support but also encouragement, metacognitive guidance, and socio-emotional scaffolding. The ecosystem was implemented with 87 Grade 8 students at Srinakharinwirot University Prasarnmit Demonstration School in Bangkok over a 12-week "Linear Equations and Inequalities" unit. Results indicate significant improvements in mathematical achievement (d = 0.83), problem-solving abilities (d = 0.89), and mathematics attitudes (d = 0.91), with particularly large reductions in math anxiety (d = 1.02). Students reported high levels of engagement and confidence, with 93% expressing that they felt more calm and focused during mathematics lessons. Teachers noted that the ecosystem helped create a more positive and inclusive classroom culture and reduced the achievement gap between high and low performers. The study contributes to the growing body of research on culturally responsive technology-enhanced mathematics education and offers practical implications for Thai educators seeking to integrate AI and digital technologies in ways that honor local cultural values and address the whole person.
