Abstract


Aiming at the pain points of "valuing results over processes" and "valuing scores over abilities" in traditional Chinese evaluation, this paper proposes a "three-dimensional dynamic evaluation model". By constructing a hierarchical scale of cognitive abilities, a coding system for practical behaviors, and a teaching diagnostic matrix, a closed-loop mechanism of "evaluation-feedback-compensation" is formed. Verified by real lesson cases, this model significantly improves students' core literacy such as text interpretation, cultural understanding, and critical thinking, providing front-line teachers with an operable chain of evaluation tools.

1. Introduction: Practical Demands for Evaluation Reform

At present, there are three major gaps in junior high school Chinese evaluation:

Goal Gap: The new curriculum standard emphasizes core literacy goals such as "cultural confidence", "thinking ability", "language application", and "aesthetic creation" (Compulsory Education Chinese Curriculum Standard (2022 Edition)), but paper-and-pencil tests still focus on knowledge memory, with ancient poetry dictation, literary common sense filling-in-the-blank accounting for more than 60% [5]; the assessment of "thinking ability" mostly stays at a simple understanding level, lacking in-depth evaluation of critical thinking and innovative thinking. For example, in the 2023 junior high school Chinese final unified examination in a certain city, only 12% of students could conduct multi-angle interpretation combined with text details for the open-ended question about "analyzing the complexity of novel characters", reflecting a significant disconnection between evaluation goals and the requirements of the new curriculum standard.

Method Gap: Process-oriented evaluation lacks quantitative tools, and teachers mostly rely on subjective experience judgment, resulting in low reliability of evaluation results. Surveys show that 85% of junior high school Chinese teachers say that "it is difficult to measure students' classroom participation and thinking development level with specific data" [3]. For example, in group cooperative learning, teachers often conduct process-oriented evaluation through "observation records" and "oral evaluation", but lack unified evaluation scales and operable quantitative indicators, and different teachers may give quite different evaluations of the same student's performance. In addition, the application rate of digital evaluation tools is less than 20%, failing to effectively use big data technology to track students' learning trajectories.

Utility Gap: Evaluation results are disconnected from teaching improvement, and the phenomenon of "ending after the exam" is common. According to the 2022 Report of the Basic Education Quality Monitoring Center of the Ministry of Education, only 38% of junior high school Chinese teachers will adjust their subsequent teaching plans according to the evaluation results [4]. In most cases, exam scores are only used for ranking and further education reference, failing to truly reflect the weak links in teaching. For example, after the mid-term exam, a school found that students had prominent problems of "confused logic in argumentative writing", but due to the lack of a continuous tracking and evaluation mechanism, the problem still did not improve significantly in the final exam, reflecting that evaluation results failed to be effectively transformed into motivation and basis for teaching improvement.

Based on this, combined with five years of junior high school Chinese teaching practice, the author explores and constructs a "three-dimensional dynamic evaluation model" rooted in the classroom and serving teaching to address the above three gaps. Guided by literacy goals, supported by quantitative tools, and focused on teaching improvement, this model aims to achieve in-depth integration of evaluation and teaching, providing a feasible path for improving the quality of junior high school Chinese teaching.

 

2. Innovation Dimension 1: Hierarchical Scale of Cognitive Abilities — Solving the Flattening of Knowledge Measurement

2.1 Theoretical Basis and Design Framework

Drawing on Bloom's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives, Chinese ability is divided into six levels: "Memorization → Understanding → Application → Analysis → Evaluation → Creation". Taking the eighth-grade expository text unit as an example:

2.2 Practical Case: Hierarchical Evaluation of Ancient Poetry Reading Ability

Hierarchical evaluation was implemented in the teaching of "Memorial to Yueyang Tower":

Basic Level: Dictate famous sentences, such as "Not pleased by external things, not saddened by personal concerns" and "Be the first to worry about the world's worries, and the last to enjoy the world's joys", and explain the specific meanings and contextual usage of content words such as "Haohao Tangtang" (describing the vastness of water) and "Xinkuang Shenyi" (feeling relaxed and happy) (Memorization). Through repeated reading and accurate interpretation, students are ensured to master the basic language knowledge of ancient poetry, laying a solid foundation for subsequent learning. For example, students are required not only to write the accurate words of "Xian Yuanshan, Tun Changjiang" (embracing the distant mountains and swallowing the Yangtze River), but also to understand the vast scene of Dongting Lake depicted in it in combination with the context, strengthening the memory and understanding of text details.

Advanced Level: Comparative analysis of the mental state differences between "migrants and poets" and "ancient virtuous people". Guide students to start with "Can the feelings of viewing things be the same?" in the text, sort out the specific performances of migrants and poets who "feel extremely sad" because of "continuous rain" and "joyful" because of "beautiful spring scenery", then compare the open-minded mind of "ancient virtuous people" who "are not pleased by external things, not saddened by personal concerns" and "worry about the people when in high positions, and worry about the monarch when in remote places", and explore the reasons for their formation and ideological connotation (Analysis). For example, through group discussion, combined with Fan Zhongyan's life experience, students understand the lofty realm of "ancient virtuous people" who transcend personal gains and losses and take the world as their own responsibility, cultivating students' dialectical thinking and in-depth text interpretation ability.

Expansion Level: Write a declaration of contemporary youth's responsibility combined with the thought of "prioritizing worries and delaying joys". Require students to base themselves on reality, combine the traditional spirit of "being the first to worry about the world's worries and the last to enjoy the world's joys" with the mission of contemporary youth, and put forward specific responsibilities and action initiatives (Creation). For example, some students wrote: "As contemporary youth, we should 'worry' about environmental pollution and social injustice, and 'joy' about scientific and technological innovation and cultural inheritance, gathering our meager strength into a torrent to promote social progress." This link encourages students to internalize the ideas of ancient poetry into values and externalize them into practical actions, improving their comprehensive literacy and innovative ability.

Effects: After a semester of hierarchical evaluation practice, the pass rate of high-order thinking in the class (i.e., the proportion of students who can complete advanced and expansion level tasks) increased from 32% before implementation to 67%, significantly improving students' analysis and creation abilities; at the same time, the basic consolidation rate of underachieving students (students with weak foundations) reached 100%, and their accuracy in ancient poetry dictation and understanding of content words all met the requirements of the curriculum standard. This result shows that hierarchical evaluation effectively takes into account the learning needs of students at different levels, not only avoiding underachieving students falling behind due to "one-size-fits-all", but also providing room for expansion for students with spare capacity, realizing the improvement of overall teaching quality. In response to the possible question of "whether stratification exacerbates the gap between students", practical data shows that the progress of students at the basic level (average score increased by 25%) is significantly higher than the average level, and the improvement of high-order thinking ability of students at the advanced and expansion levels (average score increased by 40%) is more prominent, indicating that hierarchical evaluation plays a positive role in promoting the development of all students.

 

3. Innovation Dimension 2: Coding System for Practical Behaviors — Quantifying Implicit Abilities

3.1 Construction of the "Dual-Track Observation Scale"

For implicit abilities such as oral communication and comprehensive practice, a quantifiable behavior coding system was developed, aiming to transform difficult-to-directly-measure implicit literacy into specific observable behavioral indicators, providing a scientific basis for teaching evaluation and improvement. The system includes the parallel operation of a "process-oriented observation scale" and a "result-oriented evaluation scale" to ensure comprehensive tracking of ability development.

[Debate Activity Evaluation Scale]

● Viewpoint Construction (0-3 points): Whether a clear argument is put forward (1 point), whether the arguments are sufficient and examples are appropriate (2 points); for example, whether 2-3 clear viewpoints can be extracted around the core of the debate topic and supported by specific cases or data.

● Logical Response (0-2 points): Whether the logical loopholes in the opponent's arguments can be quickly identified (1 point), and whether targeted refutation or supplementation can be carried out (1 point); for example, whether the confusion of cause and effect in the opponent's argument can be pointed out in a timely manner and counterexamples can be provided.

● Cultural Citation (0-2 points): Whether traditional cultural allusions, famous quotes or social phenomena can be appropriately associated (1 point) to enhance the depth and persuasiveness of the argument (1 point); for example, when discussing the theme of "responsibility", citing the allusion of "Everyone is responsible for the rise and fall of the country" to strengthen the viewpoint.

3.2 Lesson Application: Dynamic Tracking of Speech Ability

In the "Youth Should Be Self-Reliant" theme speech unit, the practical behavior coding system was used to achieve accurate diagnosis and improvement of students' speech ability.

Initial Diagnosis: Record students' first speech videos, and two teachers independently code them according to the "Speech Ability Coding Scale" (including dimensions such as content organization, language expression, and emotional transmission), and summarize to determine the weak points. For example, students in a certain class generally had problems of "unclear logical structure" and "insufficient emotional expression", among which "loose logic" accounted for 65%.

Intervention: To address the problem of "loose logic", a two-week mind map training course was designed. Specifically, it includes: explaining the speech structure model (introduction-argument-evidence-conclusion), demonstrating how to sort out speech outlines with mind maps, organizing groups to complete the drawing of theme speech outlines, and conducting mutual evaluation and feedback. At the same time, "story chain" exercises were introduced to strengthen the logical connection between arguments.

Re-evaluation: In the second speech, evaluation was carried out through the same coding scale. The score of the "logicality" dimension increased from an average of 2.1 points in the initial diagnosis to 3.9 points (an average increase of 1.8 points), significantly improving the organization of the speech. In addition, the average score of the "emotional transmission" dimension increased by 0.7 points, and students were more likely to enhance appeal through intonation changes and body language.

Tool Innovation: Abstract implicit abilities such as "expression ability" and "critical thinking ability" are transformed into observable, recordable and intervenable teaching objects through specific behavioral indicators (such as "clarity of arguments", "targeted refutation", and "appropriateness of cultural citation"), effectively responding to the question of "difficulty in evaluating implicit abilities" and providing an operable path for personalized teaching and ability training.

 

4. Innovation Dimension 3: Teaching Diagnostic Matrix — Driving Precise Teaching Compensation

4.1 Transformation Mechanism from Evaluation Results to Teaching Strategies

A three-dimensional matrix of "problem identification - attribution analysis - compensation design" was established:

Diagnostic Case: Attribution Matrix for the Problem of "Shallow Theme in Composition"

Attribution Dimensions: Insufficient life accumulation; Lack of thinking training

Manifestation Characteristics: Stale and monotonous examples; Inability to analyze problems fperspectives.

Compensation Strategies: Establish a "Daily Observations" material database; Conduct the "Viewpoint Transformation" activity

4.2 Empirical Effects

After implementing writing diagnosis in the ninth grade:

The proportion of top-grade compositions increased from 12% to 28%; the occurrence rate of duplicate examples decreased by 41%.

Core Value: Realize the closed loop of "promoting teaching through evaluation" and solve the phenomenon of "two skins" between evaluation and teaching. Specifically, by introducing curriculum standard-based writing diagnosis tools, teachers can more accurately identify students' specific problems in topic understanding, structure layout, language expression and ideological depth. For example, in a pilot class of a middle school, after a semester of diagnosis feedback and targeted teaching adjustments, the problem of "single arguments and lack of typicality" in students' argumentative writing was significantly improved. The occurrence rate of duplicate examples (such as repeatedly using "Edison invented the electric light" and "Madam Curie discovered radium") decreased from about 65% to 24%, effectively improving the diversity and persuasiveness of arguments. At the same time, the diagnosis results are directly fed back to teachers, prompting teaching design to shift from "experience-driven" to "data-driven". Teachers can adjust classroom focus according to the high-frequency error types in the diagnosis report (such as 32% misuse of punctuation marks and 28% improper use of transition words) and carry out special training. This "evaluation-feedback-teaching-re-evaluation" cycle mechanism makes evaluation no longer stay at the level of paper scores, but truly becomes an effective means to optimize teaching strategies and improve students' writing ability. Data shows that after implementing writing diagnosis, teachers' self-evaluation of the achievement of teaching objectives increased from 68% to 89%, and students' participation in the writing process and self-reflection ability also significantly enhanced, further verifying the practical effect of the "promoting teaching through evaluation" closed-loop model in solving the disconnection between evaluation and teaching.

 

5. Innovation Dimension 4: Metacognitive Evaluation — Activating Students' Independent Growth

5.1 Design of the "Dual-Cycle Feedback Model"

Introduce students as evaluation subjects and construct a "self-evaluation - teacher evaluation - revision" cycle to strengthen learning effects through a dual feedback mechanism. In the "self-evaluation" link, students initially evaluate their own learning achievements based on preset standards, as shown in the fragment of the "Kong Yiji" Reading Reflection Form:

In this process, group mutual evaluation serves as a supplement to "teacher evaluation", and teachers focus on guiding students to deepen their reflection rather than simply judging right or wrong. According to the experimental data of Chinese teaching in a middle school, after adopting this model, the depth indicators of students' text interpretation (such as multi-angle analysis and completeness of logical argumentation) increased by an average of 23%, and 85% of students said that "they are more willing to take the initiative to think about different views".

5.2 Practical Significance

Promoting In-Depth Thinking: By taking the initiative to correct cognitive biases, students shift from passively accepting knowledge to actively constructing understanding. For example, in the analysis of historical events, students gradually develop from single attribution (such as "war is caused by external aggression") to multi-factor comprehensive analysis (combining economy, politics, culture, etc.). This change in thinking directly improves critical thinking ability.

Reducing Teachers' Burden: Self-reflection replaces part of the correction work. Taking an 800-word composition as an example, traditional correction takes teachers about 15 minutes. After introducing metacognitive evaluation, students complete the revision of the first draft through self-evaluation and group mutual evaluation, and teachers only need to provide centralized guidance on common problems. The time for correcting a single composition can be shortened to 5 minutes. According to statistics from an educational institution, this model increases teachers' homework correction efficiency by an average of 40%.

Cultivating Lifelong Learning Ability: Forming a metacognitive habit of "evaluation - adjustment". This habit is not only applicable to classroom learning, but also important in career development. For example, data from an enterprise training shows that employees with metacognitive evaluation ability have 35% higher project review efficiency and 28% higher problem-solving ability than ordinary employees. Through continuous self-evaluation and adjustment, students can transfer learning strategies to future work and life, truly realizing lifelong learning.

 

6. Reflections and Challenges

Teachers' Professional Support: It is necessary to strengthen training on evaluation tool design. A key middle school in Hunan enabled teachers to master the method of designing literacy-oriented evaluation tools through systematic training, and the "process-oriented evaluation rubric for Chinese learning" developed by it has been promoted in the region, effectively improving the scientificity and pertinence of evaluation. Training content should include setting evaluation objectives, refining indicators, data collection and analysis, etc., to ensure that teachers can independently design evaluation tools that meet the actual teaching needs, rather than simply applying ready-made templates.

Workload Balance: It is recommended that grade groups jointly build an evaluation resource library. Taking an experimental primary school in Beijing as an example, each grade group jointly sorted out evaluation cases, rubrics and feedback templates covering different learning stages and lesson types, forming a shared resource library. This initiative reduced teachers' repetitive work by about 40%, allowing the time saved to be used for personalized tutoring and teaching innovation. The resource library should include standardized evaluation forms, analysis of typical student works, solutions to common problems, etc., and continuously optimize the resource quality through regular updates and collective discussions.

Adherence to Technical Boundaries: Adhere to "teacher-led, tool-assisted" and avoid technical dependence [4]. An AI composition correction system launched by an educational technology company once led some teachers to ignore in-depth guidance on students' writing ideas and emotional expression due to over-reliance on technical scoring. Studies have shown that when the proportion of technical tool use exceeds 60%, teachers' teaching dominance decreases significantly (China Education Informatization, Issue 5, 2022). Therefore, when introducing intelligent evaluation tools, it is necessary to clarify the core position of teachers in setting evaluation objectives, interpreting results and generating feedback, and technology is only used as an auxiliary means for data collection and preliminary analysis.

 

 Conclusion: From Measurement Tool to Education Engine

The value of the three-dimensional dynamic evaluation model lies not only in providing quantitative tools, but also in reshaping the evaluation philosophy:

Evaluation Subject: From "teacher dictatorship" to "teacher-student co-construction". For example, in the "learning contract" project carried out by a middle school in Shanghai, students participated in formulating their personal semester evaluation objectives and standards, teachers provided professional guidance, and the evaluation results were determined through joint discussion between teachers and students. This model increased students' recognition of evaluation by 58% and significantly enhanced their learning initiative (Basic Education Reference, Issue 3, 2023).

Evaluation Function: From "screening" to "growth navigation". Traditional evaluation focuses on distinguishing the advantages and disadvantages of students, while the dynamic evaluation model provides personalized growth suggestions for each student by continuously tracking their progress trajectory in language construction, thinking development, cultural inheritance, etc. For example, for students with weak reading comprehension ability, the system can recommend step-by-step reading materials and targeted training activities to achieve precise navigation of "teaching students in accordance with their aptitude".

Evaluation Ethics: Always serve "the all-round development of people" (Wen Rumin, 2023). Professor Wen Rumin pointed out that Chinese evaluation should avoid utilitarian tendencies and focus on cultivating students' humanistic literacy and aesthetic taste. In the Chinese high school entrance examination reform in a certain province, open-ended questions on "famous book reading insights" were added to encourage students to express unique views instead of pursuing standard answers, which is a positive practice of evaluation ethics.

When evaluation becomes a beacon illuminating the learning process, Chinese education can truly reach the shore of literacy education.
